Looking back: Top 5 CLE trends in 2025

Looking back: Top 5 CLE trends in 2025

January 26, 2026

In 2025, certain CLE themes rose to the top. From AI and ethics to emerging practice areas and wellness, take a look back at the five trends that defined professional development for lawyers last year.

1. Legal Technology & AI

One of the hottest CLE trends right now, legal technology and AI programs focus on how rapidly evolving tools are reshaping legal practice and lawyer responsibilities. These courses typically cover the practical use of AI for legal research, drafting, e-discovery, and practice management. Many jurisdictions now explicitly expect attorneys to understand the risks and limitations of AI, including data security, hallucinations, client disclosure obligations, and malpractice exposure. As a result, CLEs in this area are less theoretical and more hands-on, aimed at helping lawyers use technology effectively while staying compliant with professional responsibility rules and court expectations.

2. Ethics, Professional Responsibility & Bias

These topics remain a core CLE focus, but the content has expanded beyond traditional rules to address modern practice realities. Current CLEs emphasize attorney conduct in digital communication, social media, remote practice, and supervision of nonlawyer staff and AI tools, while also integrating implicit bias, cultural competency, and civility training. Many jurisdictions now require or strongly encourage credits in these areas, reflecting a broader effort to promote fairness, professionalism, and public trust in the legal system. These programs aim to help attorneys recognize how bias and ethical blind spots can affect decision-making, client relationships, and courtroom behavior.

3. Practice Management & Business Skills

This area has become a fast-growing CLE focus as lawyers are increasingly expected to run efficient, client-centered practices in addition to delivering strong legal work. These programs cover topics such as law firm operations, risk and malpractice prevention, client communication, billing and trust accounting, marketing and business development, and effective use of legal technology.

4. Emerging & Specialized Legal Areas

Trending courses include:

  • Cryptocurrency, blockchain, and fintech regulation
  • Gig economy litigation and employment issues
  • Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) developments
  • Cross-border data privacy and global compliance

These specialized areas are trending in CLE as attorneys work to keep pace with fast-changing laws driven by technology, globalization, and shifting regulations. Popular topics include cryptocurrency and digital assets, fintech regulation, ESG and sustainability compliance, gig-economy and remote workforce issues, data privacy, cybersecurity, and cross-border regulatory frameworks. These CLEs are often practical and forward-looking, helping lawyers spot risks and opportunities for clients in industries where the law is still evolving.

5. Wellness and Resilience

This subject has become an increasingly important CLE topic as the legal profession confronts high levels of stress, burnout, and mental health challenges. These programs focus on lawyer well-being, stress management, substance abuse awareness, work–life balance, and building resilience in high-pressure environments. Many jurisdictions now allow—or require—wellness-related CLE credits, recognizing that attorney health directly impacts competence, ethics, and client service. Rather than being purely motivational, modern wellness CLEs are practical and evidence-based, offering strategies attorneys can realistically integrate into their daily practice to sustain long-term professional performance and personal well-being.

While these were the defining trends of 2025, their impact continues into 2026. Find courses in the CeriFi LegalEdge catalog that build the skills and knowledge needed to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving legal landscape.

How CLE became mandatory and where it’s headed next

For much of the legal profession’s early history, learning effectively stopped at licensure. Once an attorney passed the bar, there were few formal expectations to keep pace with an evolving body of law. But as the 20th century progressed—bringing rapid expansion in regulatory frameworks, corporate law, and specialized practice areas—that model began to show its limits. The law was changing faster than lawyers were.
