Finding the right balance: how law firms are redefining hybrid work

Finding the right balance: how law firms are redefining hybrid work

October 23, 2025

The legal industry continues to evolve as firms refine their return-to-work (RTO) policies in the post-pandemic era. The early shift to remote work prompted a major rethinking of traditional office models, and by 2025, a clear trend has emerged: most firms are moving toward hybrid schedules that bring people back to the office—at least part of the time.

A mix of factors drives this transition, from client expectations and collaboration needs to mentoring, firm culture, and professional growth. By blending in-office and remote work, firms are finding a balance that supports both productivity and flexibility. Hybrid models have also become an essential recruiting and retention tool, especially among younger attorneys who view flexibility as a baseline expectation.

While many firms currently require three days in the office, the trend is shifting toward four—particularly for junior associates who benefit most from face-to-face guidance and knowledge sharing. At the same time, firms are reimagining their office layouts to encourage collaboration and community, supported by cloud-based tools that make hybrid work more seamless.

Ultimately, law firms are seeking to create workplaces that combine the best of both worlds: the connection and culture that come with in-person collaboration, and the flexibility and balance that today’s workforce values most.

How CLE became mandatory and where it’s headed next

For much of the legal profession’s early history, learning effectively stopped at licensure. Once an attorney passed the bar, there were few formal expectations to keep pace with an evolving body of law. But as the 20th century progressed—bringing rapid expansion in regulatory frameworks, corporate law, and specialized practice areas—that model began to show its limits. The law was changing faster than lawyers were.
