CLE by the Numbers

CLE by the Numbers

May 29, 2025

Here at CeriFi LegalEdge, we analyzed the tens of thousands of subscription enrollments we received in 2024 to glean some interesting insights into what our subscribers prefer. The data used was from the calendar year 2024 and only includes enrollments via subscription, to remove price point as a variable when looking at course preferences. Here’s what we found!

CLE Rush Hour Report

Not unexpectedly, our most popular months for enrollments were likely driven by compliance deadlines. June took the top spot with 13.53% of all enrollments followed by December at 11.68% and January at 11.66%. The lowest months for enrollment count were February at a meager 2.55% of all enrollments, followed by September at 5.47% and July at 5.94%.

Time, time, time!

We used average enrollment count per course to determine attorney’s preferred durations. Keep in mind that some regulators consider 50 minutes an hour and rounding rules vary, so this data is slightly less than perfect. Still, it’s interesting that the data shows that attorneys continue to prefer courses in hour-long increments with one-hour programs being the most popular duration followed by two-hour programs, with three hour programs coming in fourth. Additionally, attorneys prefer programs with half-hour increments to those with 15-minute increments, although 1.75 hours did outperform 2.5 hours. Our guess is that attorneys don’t want to try and piece together their hourly requirement via such incremental gains. Courses below 30 minutes showed low popularity, likely because a limited number of regulators allow credit for these shorter programs.

We hope you enjoyed these insights into the mind of the CLE consumer! We always enjoy uncovering new trends through our annual data analysis.

How CLE became mandatory and where it’s headed next

For much of the legal profession’s early history, learning effectively stopped at licensure. Once an attorney passed the bar, there were few formal expectations to keep pace with an evolving body of law. But as the 20th century progressed—bringing rapid expansion in regulatory frameworks, corporate law, and specialized practice areas—that model began to show its limits. The law was changing faster than lawyers were.
