MCLE Requirements

New York Transitional

MCLE Rule Summary

Newly admitted attorneys to the New York State bar (two years or less) must complete at least 32 credit hours. The first set of 16 CLE credit hours must be completed by the first anniversary of admission to the Bar. The second set of 16 CLE credit hours must be completed between the first and second anniversaries. Requirements across anniversaries are as follows:

Before 1st admission anniversary (16 total transitional CLE credits)
  • Ethics and Professionalism, For Cybersecurity privacy and data protection**: 3 credit hours
  • Skills: 6 credit hours
  • Law Practice Management and/or Areas of Professional Practice*: 7 credit hours
During second year of admission (16 total transitional CLE credits)
  • Ethics and Professionalism, For Cybersecurity privacy and data protection**: 3 credit hours
  • Skills: 6 credit hours
  • Law Practice Management and/or Areas of Professional Practice*: 7 credit hours

*All general credits in WLEC catalog are equal to Areas of Professional Practice. 

**part of the 32-credit hour requirement, 1 credit hour must be in cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection. Attorneys may apply 3 credit hours of cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection (ETHICS program) to the 6-credit hour ethics and professional requirement.

Earning MCLE Credits with LegalEdge

Live Webcast

20 credits total, including 6 Ethics and Professionalism may be satisfied.

On Demand

14 credits of Law Practice Management and/or Areas of Professional Practice may be satisfied.

Attendance Reporting Procedure

Attorneys must self-report CLE completion. The certificate of completion issued by LegalEdge may be used to verify attendance. Each attorney must file an affidavit of compliance within 30 days after completion of the compliance period.
